A slow start to blogging

Tuesday October 8, 2013

Tom and I have been on our journey for a week. We left home last Tuesday and headed out the Mass Pike with Airstream in tow to begin the retirement chapter of our adventure filled life together. First stop… New York… of all places! Picked up a quick campground for the night in the Hudson Valley and off we went bright and early the next morning. Beautiful weather, lots of trucks keeping us company. Night number 2 we spent in a Pennsylvania State Park at Locust Lake.

Very nice rangers there who asked us 3 times if we had alcohol with us! Never say “yes”… our motto. That’s why red Solo cups were invented!

So now our third day on the road, not making as much distance as we had anticipated, so Tom decided, “let’s go how the GPS suggests”! On to 95! I won’t hold it against him, but BIG mistake!

By the time we hit Northern Virginia we were hungry and tired so we stopped at a Cracker Barrel. At the end of our meal we spoke with the Manager and he let us stay the night in his parking lot! We had a little strip of grass… put out the lawn chairs… yes, red Solo cups again… saving $ in retirement!

Friday afternoon we rolled into Edisto Beach State Campground in South Carolina… destination number 1! We were here a year ago last spring and fell in love with the area. This time has not disappointed! The friendly people, local charm, fabulous beaches, live oak trees adorning hanging moss… are some of the welcoming characteristics we found in Edisto.

We came this weekend to meet some folks who were having an Airstream Rally! For those of you not “in the know”… Airstream owners can join a national club that’s been around for more than 50 years. They hold rendezvous rallies and take destination trips together all over North America. Tom read that this rally was coincidentally going to be at Edisto… we tweaked our plans just a little and met up with these folks. Very nice people… Tom loves this group stuff.

Yesterday we left Edisto for the time being and came to where I now sit writing this blog. Hunting Island State Park South Carolina is just south of Beauford. The latitude and longitude is nearly the same as Edisto, but both being islands the driving time is around 2 hours over bridges and navigating some small streets. We’ve never had a nicer campground. The palmetto’s and tall pine trees with space and privacy… although not all the sites are this nice. We have lucked out!

The weather today and yesterday has been cool and rainy… but walking on a breathtaking beach on a cloudy windy day hunting for sharks’ teeth is a pretty awesome way to spend an afternoon. Tom found 3, Barbara 0.

Pictures will follow, sporadic WiFi.

Glad to see you are enjoying your “next chapter.” We hope you are taking plenty of pictures. I tried to encourage our sister to start a blog of her travels too, but I think it fell on deaf ears.
